Volunteer

Our volunteers represent an integral part of the Food Bank's success in helping provide food to people in need in our community.  The Food Bank involves many volunteers each week in all aspects of our operation.  We welcome and appreciate your time, talent, and interest for the benefit of others in our community. We have individual and group volunteer opportunities.  In order to make our volunteer process work as smoothly as possible, there are certain policies and procedures that our volunteers are asked to follow:

Volunteer Procedures and Information:

  • The Food Bank of Nevada County does not offer volunteer service hours for court mandated community service.
  • The minimum age to volunteer is 12 years old. Volunteers between the ages of 12-15 must volunteer with an adult, and volunteers 16-17 must volunteer with parental permission.
  • The Food Bank expects you to report and work as scheduled. Hours are recorded on a project log located in the warehouse. It is important that the volunteers sign in!
  • Follow volunteer guidelines, and work safely at all time.
  • Volunteers need to have a current Volunteer Application (Click below) on file.

The Food Bank will:

  • Make every effort to provide safe working conditions. (Bathrooms and kitchens are available in the office and warehouse area.)
  • Help our volunteers select an assignment that meets their needs as well as the needs of  the Food Bank.
  • Work with volunteers to make their experiences positive and rewarding.

If you want to join the Food Bank family, please download and fill out the Volunteer Application, fax it to 530-272-7085 or mail to:

  • Assist at food distribution locations
  • Transport food to home-bound clients
  • Help with the annual food drive, fundraising, and special events

Warehouse Packing and Sorting

Sorting and packing donated food gives you a "behind-the-scenes" look at how donations from the community are distributed to our hungry neighbors in need.

Volunteer Duties: Inspect, clean, sort, box, and make donations ready for distribution.

Volunteer Hours: Tuesday and Thursday, from 9 am to noon.

Distributions

We have four sites in Nevada County where our volunteers help distribute food to families and individuals in need. To find a location and time that will work for you, please see the Monthly Distribution Calendar.

We need help from reliable drivers who will deliver food during the school year to different school sites as well as to low income housing sites in Nevada County. During the summer we need extra help packing lunches and delivering them to hungry children. This is a great opportunity for high school students.
