The Food Bank of Nevada County procures nutritious food and distributes it to the individuals and families of Nevada County who are in need.
The Food Bank is entering it's 21st year of dedicated service to our community, raising awareness of hunger in our county, and actually doing something about it!
Over the years our services have grown immensely. They now include four different Distribution Sites where our clients are able to pick up USDA commodities and community donated food items once a month. We provide assistance to Project Mana for a fifth distribution site in Truckee as well. We also provide Emergency Food handouts from our warehouse four days a week. Emergency Food is also offered at our thrift store, the Food Bank Gift & Thrift seven days a week. We have an Outreach Program for our homebound clients in which we deliver food to their homes once a month. And, finally, Project H.O.P.E., our year-round children's program [960 families are receiving help from the Food Bank monthly, and 25% of them are children, Project H.O.P.E. assists over 1200 kids a week alone on top of the 25% monthly].
We are also starting a couple programs in 2007. Food Stamp Outreach, in which we offer help assisting our clients participate in the Food Stamp Program in our county, and a Nutrition Education program where we provide our clients information about eating healthy. Another goal of the Nutrition Education program is to improve the nutritional value of food consumed by low-income children in our area.
We count on the kindness of wonderful community members to be able to provide our services. 67% of our annual income comes from private donations from residents and without their generosity, many people facing hunger in Nevada County would not get the help they need.
With the expenses like rent, gas and electric bills getting higher than ever, more families and individuals are struggling with the difficult choice between paying bills or buying food every day. We are trying to spread the word about our services so that no one in Nevada County will go hungry.
